The “Home is Where the Hip-Hop Is” Exhibition is LIVE NOW at Weeksville Heritage Center, so come check it out!

Explore the power of hip-hop through a collection of images from Ralph McDaniels, Ernie Paniccioli, Delphine Fawundu and Jamel Shabazz—photographers who have captured the spirit of NYC's urban culture for over 30 years.

Black Exhale NEST

Beginning June 1, a human-sized nest will be constructed out of natural materials at Weeksville by a gathering community and young creatives from Recess Art’s Assembly program to build sanctuary space for those entering the Black Exhale “NEST”. The exhibition will be on view through June 29.

Cash Rules Everything Around Me:
So let’s start a got damn revolution 

Brooklyn-based performance artist Ayana Evans presents a site-specific, public art project on Weeksville Heritage Center’s exterior windows from April 9–May 15, 2022. The installation is a series of videos with images from Ayana’s performance archive combined with text highlighting statistics on mass incarceration and economic inequality in New York City.

Our Story

Experience Our Story, an exhibition presented by Fulton Art Fair. The exhibition features individuals who lived in and maintained the history of Weeksville. Works by nine artists highlight the core values that ground our historic community: self determination, ownership, self empowerment, racial equality, and social justice. DISPOSITION

Join us for the opening of DISPOSITION by Marcus Jahmal. Jahmal is an artist based in Brooklyn, New York. His paintings depict domestic scenes and landscapes built from memory and imagination. In his images, which are both theatrical and quietly intimate, Jahmal showcases exuberant brushwork and his particular strengths as a colorist. Learn More

Join us on Friday January 24th 2020 for the opening reception to artist Damien Davis’ solo exhibition COLLAPSE: Black Wall Street Study showcasing his new art series which ignites the conversation surrounding currency, community and the effects of hyper visibility for the black body. Damien Davis’ practice explores historical representations of blackness by seeking to unpack the visual language of various cultures and question how these societies code/decode representations of race through craft, design and digital modes of production. Join us to celebrate the opening of MEMORY, here at Weeksville. MEMORY is a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Artist Dr. Fahamu Pecou. MEMORY speaks to a conscious, nonlinear step into all periods and styles of Blackness. It is a shift away from Western notions of Black identity and a look towards a decidedly Black aesthetic through a new lens and fresh perspective. Learn More

Divine Mother

Please join us to celebrate our new exhibition by Komikka Patton, Divine Mother. Martian (Komikka) is a 2D media artist based in New York City. She uses ballpoint pen, ink, paper and assorted printmaking techniques to create works that are centrally based on the human condition. Each illustration and print tells a different story, reflecting life, death, and the tribulations of characters that are symbolic of the stereotypical black identity. Learn More

In Our Own Words

Join us on Wednesday, June 26th for the opening of "In Our Own Words".  Curated by Author, Writer and Artist, Keisha-Gaye Anderson, this experience brings together a diverse group of immigrant poets and writers to share work that centers the multi-faceted immigrant narrative and reflects the wider world through their unique lenses vs. imposed narratives of the dominant culture. The event is set against the backdrop of an art exhibition, Co-Curated by Larry Weekes and Rey Naldo, that showcases works that echo this theme and bring light to underrepresented, and often unexplored, perspectives of the immigrant experience.
